A Century of Flight
(1903
- 2003)
The
centenary of aviation is an internationally recognized event that
will be celebrated in many countries across the world.
From
the first tentative flight in a powered aircraft on the sands of Kitty Hawk in 1903 we now can look back at the extraordinary
achievements of human ingenuity during this short period of time.
One
hundred years ago Orville Wright took to the skies for a flight of
not more than a few seconds duration. Today it is estimated that at
any given time an average of 1 million people are airborne world
wide in aircraft capable of traversing the world for distances of
thousands of kilometers at near supersonic speeds.
Malaysia
has a rich aviation heritage. Since the 1930s aircraft have been
widely used in both civilian and military roles.
During
more recent times Malaysia's National carrier MAS has forged a
leading role as one of the worlds foremost commercial airlines.
Also
of note is the fact that Malaysia is a major manufacturer of
aircraft components and even its own composite built single engine
aircraft the Eagle.
The
Malaysian national science Centre in collaboration with Air Venture
Sdn Bhd have embarked on plan to celebrate
the centenary of aviation and bring the public of this nation
to greater awareness of the impact and importance aviation has and
will continue to have on all our lives.
