TEOH SIANG TEIK

When Siang was an architectural student in university, he spent his summer holidays trekking in Nepal, where he was offered to design a hotel in Pokhara. As the construction progressed, Siang encountered major obstacles. One was the lack of electricity for heating water. Solar energy was in abundance up in the Himalayans. He was compelled to come up with a more efficient solar-powered water heater. He worked on many ideas and design until he perfected one that uses a multi-valve system. It proved to be quite revolutionary, and Time Magazine honoured him as one of the Heroes for the Planet in 1999.
